How a Solar Inverter Works - and Why It Decides Your Yield

The panels get all the attention, but the inverter is the component that determines how much usable electricity your roof actually delivers. It is also the part most likely to need service during the life of the system. Understanding what it does makes it much easier to judge whether a quote is sound.

The Basic Job: DC to AC

Solar panels produce direct current. Your building, and the grid, run on alternating current at 230 V and 50 Hz. The inverter performs that conversion continuously, and modern units do it at 97 to 98% efficiency. The remaining loss becomes heat - which is why mounting location matters in the Thai climate.

A solar panel has one operating point at which it delivers maximum power, and that point shifts constantly with sunlight and temperature. The inverter's Maximum Power Point Tracker hunts for it several times per second. A good MPPT stage, and enough separate trackers for your roof layout, can be worth several percent of annual yield.

This is why the number of MPPT inputs matters. If your roof has sections facing different directions, they should ideally go to separate trackers. Forcing them onto one input means the weaker section drags down the stronger one throughout the day.

The Part That Actually Earns Money: MPPT

A grid-tied inverter must disconnect within milliseconds if the grid fails. This is called anti-islanding, and it exists to protect utility workers who may be repairing the line. It is also why a standard on-grid system gives you no power during an outage, even in bright sunshine - a point that surprises many owners.

If you want power during outages you need a hybrid inverter with a dedicated backup output and, in most cases, a battery. This is a design decision made before installation, not something that can be retrofitted cheaply afterwards.

Grid Protection and Anti-Islanding

It is often said that surplus solar is simply credited against your bill. In Thailand it is not. The country operates net billing: PEA and MEA buy exported electricity at around 2.20 THB per kWh, while you pay roughly 4.10 THB to draw it back. Getting into the programme is also still difficult today - places are limited and allocated first come, first served. Easier access has been announced, but is not reality yet.

The practical consequence is clear: size the system around your own daytime consumption first. Oversizing in the hope of export income rarely pays in Thailand under current conditions.

What Excess Power Is Actually Worth in Thailand

On-Grid, Hybrid or Off-Grid

On-Grid

Simplest and cheapest. Feeds the building directly and exports the surplus. No power during outages. The right choice for most properties with a stable grid connection and daytime consumption.

Hybrid

Adds battery management and a backup output. More expensive and more complex, but shifts midday surplus into the evening and keeps essential circuits running during a blackout.

Off-Grid

No grid connection at all. Requires generous battery capacity and careful load planning. Makes sense where a grid connection would be prohibitively expensive.

Heat Is the Enemy

Inverter lifetime in Thailand is largely a question of temperature. A unit mounted on a west-facing wall in full afternoon sun runs far hotter than the same unit in a shaded, ventilated position - and sustained heat is what ages the electronics. Above a certain internal temperature an inverter will also derate, deliberately reducing output to protect itself. Correct placement costs nothing and matters more here than in most markets.

The inverter is where a well-planned system separates itself from a cheap one. Enough MPPT trackers for your roof, correct sizing against your actual consumption, a shaded and ventilated mounting position, and a manufacturer with local service and spare parts.
